Dramatised documentary about Byzantium’s relations with Venice, but also about the West’s responsibilities for the first fall of Constantinople in 1204.
Irene, a young Greek girl, arrives in Venice just before the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to marry Lorenzo, a Venetian. Irene’s correspondence with her uncle, Leo Philanthropinos, who lives in Romania, now under venetian and French rule, gives us the opportunity to examine some elements of Venice’s history, and her peculiar relationship with Byzantium –once as a province, later as an ally, and finally as a conqueror–. The Venetians’ views, which Irene transmits in her letters, provoke the angry replies of her uncle, who, seeing things fron his own standpoint, provides her with an alternative view and a more global perspective.
