“Built To Burn” aims to shed light on the peculiarities of the Cucuteni Culture. A Neolithical people who lived on the territory of present-day Romania, the Cucuteni, remain one of the biggest mysteries of modern archaeology, as they left no traces of cemetaries or funeral rituals. Instead, their legacy consists of a vast treasure of painted ceramics and the remains of burnt houses and vitrified bones.
Through a series of five experiments that grow more and more complex in nature, the makers try to solve the mystery of the burnt dwellings. The same people that apparently spent 30-40% of their time building houses and working on ceramic vases and statues, consumed insane amounts of wood to burn it all down.
As the archaeologists test their theories through demanding experiments, they gain more insight into a culture that essentially burned itself to the ground.
