Alexandrian cisterns, known since Antiquity, excited the admiration of travelers, and they were often seen as a real underground city. At the beginning of 1990’s, only one of them could be visited, so the Centre for Alexandrian Studies launched an ambitious project to rediscover these cisterns, based on documents of the Greco-Roman Museum, memories of old inhabitants and findings from rescue excavations. Many of these monuments are already listed and studied; restoration projects are planned as well as an opening to the public. The film is a visit to the most beautiful cisterns of the city, and presents the history of their evolution.
