From the North of Britain to the Euxine Sea, a fortified border, thousand kilometers long, was stretching across Europe: Limes Romanus, the “Iron Curtain” of the Roman Empire. Rivers, fences and walls constituted the bastion of Rome against barbarian invasions. Along the limes, prosperous towns were established by roman conquerors and were protected by fortified walls and legions. But how well protected were these towns? How effective was the limes border defense? Could it hold back North tribes’ invasions? What happened when the Roman Empire showed signs of weakness? How did the Romans face the danger at the borders?
Difficult questions to be answered, as many parts of this, once strong, boundary line of Europe, are buried under the ground…
