Ten byzantine churches of Cyprus in the World Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO

The ten churches presented in this documentary date from the 11th to the 16th AD, i.e. six centuries during which Cyprus was a part of the Byzantine Empire, then was conquered by the Crusadors in 1192, sold to the Lusignians (1192-1489), taken over by the Venetians (1489-1571) and finally conquered by the Turks in 1571.
The Byzantine art of wall painting in Cyprus reached its floruit in the 12th c. during the reign of the Comnenian Dynasty in Constantinopolis. Consequently, after 1192, the art reflects the succession of political changes that took place in Cyprus, both thematically and in stylistic trends. According to the reasoning, on the basis of which these churches were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, “the art of these churches incorporate elements that demonstrate the relation between Oriental and Western Christian Art”.
