From space to human relations: Corfu’s feudal estates, 15th-18th centuries

A combination of written information from texts of the period and detailed illustrations of the landscape, as cultivated and settled (18th century colour charts, compared with its contemporary photographic imprints).
This is a history lesson which aims to show the way historical knowledge is produced, and how this acquired knowledge can be placed within new interpretative frameworks. Corfu’s feudal estates, which contained the largest portion of the island’s cultivated land, have been chosen as our field of observation and experimentation.
The object of the exercise is to demonstrate the mechanisms which control the economy and subsequently human interrelations, both social and familial, as well as to show the imprints of all the above onto the landscape (type of cultivation, ways of naming and holding land, methods of surplus distribution).
