A guided exploration and scientific survey of the Kythera Caves began from the summer of 2008 till 2010. During these three years, over 40 caves on this beautiful Greek island were investigated and studied.
The Hellenic Speleological Society, with its qualified and experienced cavers and researchers, managed to record, map and explore these caves, setting the basis for a more comprehensive study of all these treasures of the Greek land, which started in the year of 1930, by professor Ioannis Petrochilos and his wife, Anna Minardou-Petrochilou.
In Kythera, from the Byzantine period the phenomenon of formation of caves into holy Orthodox churches is being observed . Places of worship and prays are formed within the natural cavities of the rocks.
The film presents a part of these caves, in order to show the uniqueness of the Kythera speleological riches. It records the efforts of the speleological mission to explore and to record the caves. The team, consisted of 26 members (scientists in speleology and researchers, as well as students of ancient and Byzantine history of the University of Athens) who explore and study the underwater caves and the precipices of the island for the first time.
