Giulio Manieri is an international anarchist who led a failed revolt and was condemned to death in 1870. The sentence is commuted to life imprisonment and Manieri fills his solitary cell with fantasies. Talking to himself, he pretends to be in the middle of political debates and witness the triumph of the revolution. Years later, while struggling against madness, during a transfer, he has an exchange of ideas with other “rebels” and realizes that their methods of combat are completely alien to him. Deeply disappointed and embittered he prefers death to life.

The film is based on Leon Tolstoy’s novel “The Divine and the Human”.
