The scene for this film is set on a nearly forgotten penninsula in the southwest of Turkey: Lycia, land of sarcophages, cyclopes and mythical heroes. A beautiful, wildly romantic landscape, thinly populated and full of antique ruins. A place to meet history at every step. Who were the Lycian people? How did they live? An international team of researchers, under the direction of the University of Tubingen, is examining the settling-history of the land of Lycia. The camera follows the scientists closely, thus offering us an intimate look on unusual research methods, important finds and the newest results of scientific work. By means of vivid, fascinating pictures, the film tries to answer questions like: what do the current inhabitants of a historical site know about their ancestors? What were the reasons for the decline of such a highly developed civilisation as that of ancient Lycia?
