It is usually estimated that the Emperor Diokletian had the Palace in Split built after he had decided to withdraw, around 293. However, analysing the Egyptian decorative elements originally built into the palace –several hundreds of columns and at least eleven sphynxs (that have also so far been found)– we come to some new conclusions concerning the exact date and the circumstances surrounding the building.
