The Passion of Memory – Uch Kulack, Uzbekistan

In the heart of Asia, situated in a strategic position along the ancient Silk Road, stands one of the countries with the richest history in Central Asia –the Republic of Uzbekistan. Two of the most fascinating and mythical cities of ancient times are found in this region –he cities of Bukhara and Samarkand. Important ruins have been brought back to light in the Bukhara oasis, thanks to excavations carried out on the Uch Kulach hills in superintended by Professor Chiara Silvi Antonini. The site (a fortified castle from the Late-Medieval period) is standing proof of the millenary Uzbek culture. Very good relations have been established over the years between the Uzbeck labourers and Professor Silvi Antonini. So much so that often the director of the excavation and her collaborators are invited into their homes. This gives them the opportunity to observe the traditions of a kind population, open to living together, dignified and tolerant despite the country’s many economic difficulties. For centuries this region has been the crossroads to culture and trade between the East and the West, It is historically known as the “land of the thousand cities” and for its extensive fruit orchards. Today its main, if not only, resource is the production of cotton.
