Today, June 1, 1996, Agon’s Committee met and awarded eight prizes in total, for:
1. Conceptual Originality, 2. Direction, 3. Script, 4. Photography, 5. Educational Film, 6. Prize of the journal ARCHAIOLOGIA & TECHNES,
7. Grand Prize of the Greek Film Archive, 8. Grand Prize of the Awarding Committee
The prize for Conceptual Originality is awarded to the film LAOCOON’S RETURN, THE TROAD LANDSCAPE AS A MEMORIAL OF WAR (Germany), for its daring to draw parallels between archaeological subjects and problems of the contemporary world.
The prize for the Best Direction is awarded to the film THE GRECO-ROMAN MUSEUM OF ALEXANDRIA (Egypt), for its successful attempt to enliven the naturally static exhibits of the Museum of Alexandria, using dialogues transcending the ages.
The prize for the Βest Script is awarded to the film MADE BY LYSIPPUS (Greece), for its sensitive and literary approach to the sculptor Lysippus and his work.
The prize for the Best Photography is awarded to the film DOKOS, THE OLDEST KNOWN SHIPWRECK IN THE WORLD (Greece), for its skillful use of equipment in underwater photography and its recording of the oldest known shipwreck in the world.
The prize for the Best Educational Film is awarded to the film MEMORIE OF FIRE. MEMORIE OF EARTH (France), for its convincing and appealing style and for the accurate cinematic presentation of a lecture in experimental archaeology.
The prize of the journal ARCHAIOLOGIA & TECHNES is awarded to the film THE GODS BEYOND AND AROUND (Bulgaria), for its consistent style and its balance between picture, spoken word and narrative, in a truly archaeological documentary.
The prize of the Greek Film Archive is awarded to the film BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH – THE OCCULT SIDE OF ART (Italy), for its freedom of expression, its prolific use of the cinematic language and its philosophical symbolism and conceptions.
The Grand Prize of the Awarding Committee is awarded to the film APER-EL, THE FORGOTTEN VIZIER (France), for its harmonious thematic development, its scientific approach to the archaeological data, and its impeccable cinematic language.
