Akrotiri Peninsula

The purpose of this documentary is to project the Akrotiri Peninsula, one of the most beautiful and important areas of Cyprus. The geological history of the area is particularly interesting since it did not have the form which it currently has.
Akrotiri hosts the earliest human presence, since this is where Aetokremmos is located, the most ancient archaeological site in Cyprus.
What characterizes the peninsula is the vast variety of ecosystems. In total 27 types of ecosystems have been registered both land and marine. The wetland system of the area with the Salt Lake and the neighbouring Livadi, have been declared protected areas of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Moreover the peninsula has been declared a reserve by Birdlife International. The flora of the area is also of exceptional importance and it is estimated that more than 800 species can be found here. The wetlands were and still are extremely important to the inhabitants of the area. For example, they would not be able to engage in basketry if it were not for these wetlands.
