Closure of the 12th International Festival of Archaeological and Cultural Documentary – AGON

The 12th International Festival of Archaeological and Cultural Documentary AGON was completed with great success on Sunday, May 26.

The screenings of the 61 films that competed took place from 20 to 25 May and aroused the intense interest of the audience, who filled the hall of the Greek Film Archive, even selling out the available tickets on some of the screening days.  Directors, film contributors, artists, scientists and friends of the Festival from Greece and abroad honored AGON with their presence and enjoyed the screenings of the films.

Many directors, producers and film supporters from all over the world were present at the Film Archive to introduce their films, introducing viewers to the process of making a documentary and expanding the cinematic experience with short discussions after screenings.

The Awards

On Sunday, May 26, the award ceremony of AGONA was held at the Olympia Theater – Municipal Music Theater “Maria Callas”, presented by the founder and President of AGON, director Memi Spyratou. The ceremony was co-organized with the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA).

The awards, which were voted by an International Jury, were awarded by members and valuable collaborators of the AGON, as well as important figures from the political scene, such as His Excellency the Ambassador of Poland Mr. Artur Lombart (awarded the Best Director Award) and His Excellency the Ambassador of Cyprus (awarded the Grand Prix), Mr. Stavros Avgoustides.

The closing ceremony continued with the screening of the film “What did they do to them? What happened to them? 50 years since the invasion of Cyprus”, created by the 4th Primary School of Xanthi, on the subject of the 50 years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The film, which won the 1st prize in the competition “Cyprus – Greece – Diaspora educational bridges” in the category Fiction Film, created great emotion among the attendees.

The evening ended with a great concert-offered by George Dalaras, which thrilled the audience and was the best closing for the 12th International Festival of Archaeological and Cultural Documentary AGON. Along with George Dalaras were Aspasia Stratigou, Alexandros Tzouganakis and a nine-member orchestra.

The International Festival of Archaeological and Cultural Documentary AGON will meet its audience and participants again in 2026, for its 13th edition!
